What's new in buggs.io

What changed in each version of buggs.io, newest first.

0.4.2 to 0.4.8, October 2026

  • The Android app is out on Google Play. The iPhone and iPad app is still to come.
  • Purchases in the Android app go through Google Play.
  • Some bug and power-up descriptions promised more than the game does. They now say exactly what happens. For example, the Bumblebee's passive no longer promises a knockback resistance it never had.

0.4.0, October 13, 2026

  • Bots with personalities. Every bot now plays like its bug. A mantis or a black widow waits by a mushroom patch and boosts across the path of a smaller bug. Caterpillars and ladybirds put food first and run when a big head turns their way. Dragonflies and hornets hunt and cut you off. Ants, honeybees and termites guard the part of the arena where they hatched. A style changes how a bot plays, not how well.
  • Replays. Every offline game is kept as a replay you can watch again, from the death card or the new Replays sheet in the menu. The game keeps your last 10 offline games, plus up to 50 you star. You can pause, play at half speed up to four times, and jump along the bar.
  • Your level online. Online, your level, each bug's mastery and your lifetime stats now belong to your online account. Runs on your device still count as practice (Settings ▸ Account shows it) and still open bugs and power-ups for offline games.
  • Settings ▸ Accessibility. A color-blind-safe palette for the rarity colors, high contrast, a bigger or smaller HUD, invert boost, and a one-switch mode for playing with a single key, button or touch. How to play describes each one.
  • Step away and come back. Switch tabs or apps for a moment and you're still in the arena, with the same bug, run and kills. The server holds your place for two minutes.
  • Battery saver. When your device runs hot, is low on battery or starts dropping frames, the arena draws fewer effects. The game itself never slows down. Choose Auto, Off or On in Settings ▸ Game ▸ Battery saver.
  • Report a nickname. Online, you can report another player's name from the leaderboards or the death screen. You pick one of four reasons. There's nothing to type.
  • In the arena. Size decides a head-on crash only when the two heads meet front to front. If you cut across a bigger bug's path even slightly ahead of it, it's the one that dies. The husk from Molt Husks now looks like the bug that shed it: a pale, empty shell.

0.3.2, October 2026

  • Kill cam. When another bug gets you, the last few seconds play back before the death card. The bug that got you is ringed in red, and the moment itself plays in slow motion. Any key, click or tap skips it, and the kill cam button (R) on the death card plays it again.
  • Share. The Share button (S) makes a picture of your run: that slow-motion moment, how it ended, your peak mass, kills, time and rank. You can save it or post it. The game never posts anything by itself.
  • Twelve trails that move. Inferno's flames flicker, Glacier's snowflakes spin and Thunderstorm's lightning flashes. Tidal, Verdant, Shadow, Gale, Terra, Stardust, Rainbow, Hearts and Spirit Flame came too. Your trail also shows on the big bug in the main menu.
  • Molt Husks from the tail. The husk is now the last stretch of your body, ending at the tail, instead of the part right behind your head.
  • Side hits. If your head runs into the side of another bug's head, you die, whatever the sizes, just like running into a body. This turned around the 0.3.1 rule below.

0.3.1, October 9, 2026

  • Halloween skins for every bug. All 33 bugs now have one. The 25 new ones include a Ghost Mantis, a Vampire Mosquito and a Mummy Scarab. Like the rest of the set, they're sold only during Halloween.
  • Giants keep growing. Bugs used to stop getting visibly bigger around mass 4,000. Now they keep getting longer and fatter up to 5,000, where a "MAX SIZE!" note tells you.
  • Kind nicknames. If a nickname isn't kid friendly, the name field turns red and says so, and Play waits until you change it. The filter also catches far more than it did.
  • A spookier Haunted Hollow. More spider webs, cartoon skulls, crooked fences and little ghosts in the mist.
  • Trails and ground. Your trail now runs along your whole bug, head to tail. Both maps have lighter ground, so black and dark bugs stand out.
  • Phones and bad connections. On phones, the camera stays closer to big bugs. Online, a PING or LAG SPIKES chip tells you when the connection is why the game feels choppy, and other bugs move more smoothly on an unsteady connection.
  • Head hits. Size started to count only when two heads meet front to front. At the time, a head hit from the side died whatever its size (0.3.2 changed that).
  • Bot names. Bots got funny, kid-friendly bug names, like Sir Wigglesworth and Captain Crawly.

0.3.0, October 5, 2026

  • Eight new bugs. The Mosquito, the Tsetse Fly, the Mole Cricket, the Bullet Ant, the Black Widow, the Elephant Beetle, and two legendaries: the Asian Giant Hornet and the Deathstalker Scorpion. Each has its own passive and five skins. The Emperor Scorpion's old "Deathstalker Scorpion" skin is now called Straw Scorpion.
  • Six new power-ups, each for the bugs it suits: Spring Leap, Chorus Chirp, Stinger Strike, Leaf Camouflage, Sap Siphon and Horn Charge. Bots fire them when they carry them.
  • Kill streaks. Every 10th kill in a run adds a charge to your emptiest power-up slot and makes it ready at once, up to 5 times a run. Bots earn them too.
  • Haunted Hollow, a Halloween map with pumpkins, gravestones, candles and mist. Pick it or Meadow before you play. A map changes only the look, never the rules.
  • Bugs look more like the real thing. Jointed legs, clear veined wings, each beetle's true shape, hairy bees and tarantulas. Feet stay planted as bugs walk, and antennae, jaws and tails sway. Every skin got the new look.
  • Collection and touch fixes. Filtering the Collection to one bug shows its skins, the power-ups it can carry and every trail. Taps work with any finger, and every list scrolls with a mouse wheel or trackpad.
  • A new icon. A big tilted ant holding a mushroom. While the web version loads, the ant's procession walks the progress bar, eating as it goes.

0.2.0, October 4, 2026

  • Every bug, power-up, skin and trail is in one Collection, grouped by kind, and each says how you unlock it.
  • Power-ups can now be unlocked with coins too, but every one can still be unlocked with XP. Charges, cooldowns and loadout slots are never sold.
  • XP you earn offline stays on your device. It opens bugs and power-ups for offline games, and online unlocks use your online XP.
  • Three more skins for every bug: two to buy and one you earn with XP.
  • Six new trails, some of them two-tone, and three seasonal sets (Halloween, Christmas and New Year) that are sold only during their season.

0.1.0

The first version these notes cover.

  • Weather. Every five minutes, a few circles appear: Heatwave, Downpour, Gale, Blizzard or Thunderstorm. Keep your head out of them. How to play says what each one does.
  • Weather caches. During a weather event, a power-up cache sits at the center of each circle. If it matches a slot, that slot fills up and is ready at once.
  • Leaderboards. Daily, weekly and monthly boards of the best online runs. The death screen shows where your run placed.
  • A layout for phones. Fewer, bigger buttons, a joystick that comes to your thumb, and BOOST with the power-up buttons at the bottom right. The Interface setting switches between the phone and desktop layouts.
  • The camera grows with you. It starts close when you're small and pulls out as you grow, and bugs are drawn bigger as they gain mass.
