About buggs.io
buggs.io is a small independent game made by Max and published by POWERUP GAMING LLC, a limited liability company in Tennessee, United States. It's a multiplayer .io game where you play a bug, eat to grow longer and cut the other bugs off. You can play it free in your browser.
Who makes it
buggs.io is made by Max, a game developer. It's a one-person operation: the game, its servers, this website and support all run through POWERUP GAMING LLC.
How it's made
- One rulebook. The rules of the game live in one place: a simulation written in JavaScript. The game server runs it for every online arena, and the arena moving behind the home page is that same code, running live in your browser.
- Built with Godot. The game you play is made with the free and open-source Godot Engine. It carries a line-for-line port of the rulebook, and an automated test plays the same arena in both and compares them tick by tick.
- Drawn by code. There is no hand-drawn or stock art in buggs.io. Every bug, the ground and every sound is generated by code from a recipe: a bug's colors, pattern, legs, wings and antennae are data, and the game paints it. The bug portraits on this website are rendered by the game's own painters.
- Written from scratch. The game server uses no third-party packages, down to the code that talks to your browser.
- Real bugs. Every one of the 33 bugs is based on a real animal and carries its scientific name, from Lasius niger, the black garden ant, to Titanus giganteus, the titan beetle. Meet them all.
Fair play
- Nothing you pay for is random. There are no loot boxes. Everything you can buy shows what you'll get before you pay.
- Some things are never sold: power-up charges, cooldowns and loadout slots.
- Every power-up can be earned. Each one is free or unlocks with XP from playing online, including the ones that can also be bought with coins.
- Paid boosts stay out of ranked games. Boosts such as Start Big can't be used there.
- Bots play by the rules. They follow every rule a player does and can't do anything a player can't.
- No chat. The only text a player types is a nickname (and a club name), and the servers show "Bug" instead of a nickname the filter finds offensive. The Community Guidelines say what else is and isn't okay.
