Grasshopper
Big hind legs, bigger hops, shortest memory in the arena.
Common bugs are free to play. The game shows how to get each one.
Passive: Leaper
+8% speed and +14% boost, but boosts burn 15% more mass.
A passive is always on: you never fire it and it never runs out. It is what the Grasshopper does that no other bug does quite the same way.
Stats
Stats are multipliers on the standard bug, which is ×1.00 in everything (the game shows them as percentages: ×1.14 is 114%). Turn is Agility in the game. For Boost drain, lower is cheaper.
| Stat | Grasshopper | Compared with the standard bug |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | ×1.08 | 8% faster |
| Turn | ×1.00 | the standard |
| Bulk | ×1.02 | 2% thicker |
| Growth | ×1.08 | 8% more from food |
| Boost | ×1.14 | boosts 14% faster |
| Boost drain | ×1.15 | boosting costs 15% more |
| Spawn mass | 18 | the standard |
Power-ups
Every bug has 5 power-up slots. The Grasshopper can carry 10 of the game's 18 power-ups: the 5 core ones every bug carries, and 5 more that its traits from the real animal allow. Its traits are jumper, ground, fast, gardener and singer.
Burrow
Go underground for 5s: untargetable, invisible to bots, 40% slower, cannot eat.
From its ground trait.
Hyperdash
Instantly teleport 420u forward; for 0.4s only the wall can kill you.
From its fast and jumper traits.
Nectar Bloom
For 10s every mouthful is worth double and you regenerate 6 mass per second.
From its gardener trait.
Spring Leap
A big spring-loaded leap: for 0.8s you move 2.2x as fast and sail over every other bug.
From its jumper trait.
Chorus Chirp
Instant loud song: every enemy within 260u is slowed 45% for 2.5s. Never squishes.
From its singer trait.
Core power-ups: Nitro Wings, Molt Husks, Phase Shift, Pheromone Call, Shockwave.
How bots play it
Bots fill every seat no player is using. A bot playing the Grasshopper plays it as a Skittish. Jumpy: the widest berth around bodies, the earliest flight and quick evasive boosts; it fires defensive power-ups early.
Other skittish bugs: Mosquito, Monarch Butterfly, Tsetse Fly, Cockroach, Firefly, Luna Moth.
Skins
The Grasshopper has 7 skins. A skin changes only how it looks, never how it plays. See them in the full skin gallery.
Desert Grasshopper
Sandy tan with brown stripes, lost against dry grass.
Painted Grasshopper
After the painted grasshopper: a dark olive body on fiery red legs.
Rosy Grasshopper
The rare pink morph of the meadow: hot-pink body, blush wing covers and berry-red hoppers.
Locust Grasshopper
Gregarious-phase swarm colours: blazing yellow with jet-black legs and banding.
Turquoise Grasshopper
The alpine chameleon grasshopper's sun-warmed turquoise, crowned with a chain of gold diamonds.
Gingerbread Grasshopper
A baked-brown hopper piped with white icing: icing dots down the wing covers and iced legs.
Scarecrow Grasshopper
Straw-gold with red patches and denim-blue legs, hopping down from its post in the pumpkin field.
The real animal
The Grasshopper in buggs.io is based on Schistocerca americana, and its traits come from what the real animal does. Read about it on Wikipedia.
