Wolf Spider
Runs its prey down instead of waiting in a web.
Rare bugs unlock with XP you earn playing online, or with coins. The game shows how to get each one.
Passive: Pursuit
+8% speed and +10% boost, built to run prey down.
A passive is always on: you never fire it and it never runs out. It is what the Wolf Spider does that no other bug does quite the same way.
Stats
Stats are multipliers on the standard bug, which is ×1.00 in everything (the game shows them as percentages: ×1.14 is 114%). Turn is Agility in the game. For Boost drain, lower is cheaper.
| Stat | Wolf Spider | Compared with the standard bug |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | ×1.08 | 8% faster |
| Turn | ×1.10 | turns 10% faster |
| Bulk | ×0.98 | 2% thinner |
| Growth | ×1.00 | the standard |
| Boost | ×1.10 | boosts 10% faster |
| Boost drain | ×1.08 | boosting costs 8% more |
| Spawn mass | 18 | the standard |
Power-ups
Every bug has 5 power-up slots. The Wolf Spider can carry 10 of the game's 18 power-ups: the 5 core ones every bug carries, and 5 more that its traits from the real animal allow. Its traits are spinner, ambusher, ground, predator and fast.
Venom Trail
For 8s you leave lingering venom clouds behind you that squish any head entering them.
From its predator and spinner traits.
Silk Snare
Fires a silk bolt up to 520u. On hit the target is slowed 60% and cannot turn well for 3s.
From its spinner and ambusher traits.
Burrow
Go underground for 5s: untargetable, invisible to bots, 40% slower, cannot eat.
From its ground trait.
Hyperdash
Instantly teleport 420u forward; for 0.4s only the wall can kill you.
From its fast trait.
Leaf Camouflage
Blend into the leaves for 6s: bots no longer see your head as a threat or as prey, and other players see you faded.
From its ambusher trait.
Core power-ups: Nitro Wings, Molt Husks, Phase Shift, Pheromone Call, Shockwave.
How bots play it
Bots fill every seat no player is using. A bot playing the Wolf Spider plays it as a Hunter. Roams for prey: chases bugs up to ~57 % of its mass from further off and boosts to cut them off well ahead.
Other hunter bugs: Centipede, Stag Beetle, Dragonfly, Tarantula Hawk, Asian Giant Hornet.
Skins
The Wolf Spider has 6 skins. A skin changes only how it looks, never how it plays. See them in the full skin gallery.
Ash Wolf Spider
Smoky ash-grey with pale silver stripes and grey legs.
Desert Wolf Spider
Sandy tan with dark brown stripes, camouflaged for desert sand.
Pirate Wolf Spider
Olive waterside hunter with bright white flank stripes, after the Pirata wolf spiders.
Brood Wolf Spider
A chestnut mother carrying her pale spiderlings on her back, as wolf spiders really do.
Eyeshine Wolf Spider
A twilight-blue night hunter whose eyes and ring markings flash ice-cyan, like wolf spider eyeshine in a torch beam.
Lantern-Eye Wolf Spider
Charcoal with pumpkin-orange legs and chevrons, and eyes that shine amber, like a wolf spider caught in a flashlight beam.
The real animal
The Wolf Spider in buggs.io is based on Hogna carolinensis, and its traits come from what the real animal does. Read about it on Wikipedia.
